The Degrees and the Attunement

The class pages described a staircase, not a door. Reiki training at the school climbed in degrees, and between each step stood the ritual the whole system rests on: the attunement. A field guide to a service district maps a different kind of ladder, but the shape is the same: steps taken in order, with someone holding the door.

The first degree

Level one was the foundation class, the one the school's founder took in 1996 and never quite left. The student learns the history, the hand positions, the precepts, and the habit the tradition cares most about: working on yourself first. First-degree Reiki was presented as enough for a lifetime of self-treatment and informal care of family and friends, which is why the school taught it through community education programs as well as privately.

The second degree

Level two added the symbols and their uses, and with them the practice's stranger claims: mental and emotional treatment, and distance healing. The attunement at this level, the page said, deepened what the first opened. Second degree is also where the school's online teaching operated, since instruction and some forms of practice could travel where the teacher could not.

The master level

The third step divided depending on lineage and intention. In the Western system the school taught, the master teacher level carried both the master symbol and the ability to attune others, the point at which a student could, in the tradition's own sense, hand the practice on. The site noted that mastery in Reiki is not measured by years alone; it is conferred by the training and the attunement, then proven by practice.

What an attunement is

The attunement page tried to describe the indescribable part. A short ceremony, performed by the teacher, in which the student is, in the tradition's language, opened or tuned to the Reiki frequency. The school's founder called giving and receiving attunements miraculous and a gift of healing empowerment, and that is nearly the most fervent sentence on the whole site.

For the reader, the practical facts are these: an attunement is brief, it is given in person in the Western format, it cannot be self-administered, and in this school's practice it came wrapped in small classes where each student was watched. Whatever the ritual does inside, the archive shows what it did outside: it produced the volunteer practitioners who ran the Monday clinic.

The classroom record

The archive preserves the scaffolding around the degrees: class descriptions, schedules, a page on what an attunement is, and a free training sampler the school offered to the curious. What it does not preserve is enrollment. How many students took each level is unrecorded, except in the founder's aggregate of hundreds of students and in the visible consequence, the volunteer bench that staffed the clinic.

The degrees also explain the site's own vocabulary. Pages distinguish a practitioner from a master teacher, a Shoden graduate from a Shihan, because the degrees were real boundaries in the school's life: only the attuned could practice, only the trained could teach, and only the founder signed certificates. The ladder was short but every rung was load-bearing.

One more thing the degrees explain is patience. The school did not run the levels back to back; the tradition asks for practice time between them, and the class schedule assumed a student would live with first degree for months before asking for the second. The archive's class pages change dates year over year but never compress the ladder, which is the schedule itself making an argument: the attunement opens the door, and the walking is the degree.
